Year of Projects Sept 28

I am determined to have a much more exciting Year of Projects post next week. I would very much like to go ahead and cast on a ton of new projects like a hat, a new sweater and a baby blanket, but all I have for this week is just a few rows knitted on the Textured Shawl. Times are busy with school and kid stuff so I haven't been knitting as much as I would like, but if I can finish a few chores this weekend I'll have more time to knit (I hope). I might even brave the old storage unit.

Tomorrow is video blog day so come back and visit for that. I think I'm going to tell my learning to knit story.

Here's my progress for the year!

Year of Projects Sept 14

texturedshawl92014

Another week, another Sunday of Year of Projects. That Startitis I talked about last week didn't come to fruition. I bummed myself out when I realized that one of the yarns I wanted to use was in storage. Visiting my storage space is a sad feeling because it reminds me of all of the crap we had to deal with last year: moving in with my mother in law, getting rid of almost all of our furniture and putting most of our books and things in storage. It doesn't help that the storage unit is packed to the gills and trying to find anything in there is an exercise in patience, strength and perseverence.

Instead I went running to the Textured Shawl. It's easy enough. I even found the pattern in my car!! I finally gave it a looksee and discovered that I'm almost done with the darned thing and if I make it my go-to project for a few weeks I'll have another finished object on my hands (or shoulders as the case may be). I've knit through a good twenty rows this week. I'd say another week or two and this thing will be finished. Guess I should find myself some blocking wires.

Year of Projects Labor Day Edition

labordaybeachyraglan2

I'm fighting a cold hence the lateness with which I present my entry for this week's year of projects. I've steamed ahead on the Beachy Raglan, finishing one sleeve and getting a very good start on the second. This pullover will by done by the end of the week (with any luck)

Here's the pics:

I'm hoping that I might even finish it in time for Finished Object Wednesday! Let's give that a whirl, huh?

The fit on this project was excellent and I only had 6 skeins of yarn to work with. I could use one extra skein to lengthen the bottom, but we'll see how it looks once both sleeves are done.

Here's my progress for the year!

Year of Projects Sept 7

It's Sunday and Year of Projects day today. I have a finished object for today:

yearofprojectsbeachyraglandone

It's the beachy raglan, AKA the Summer Tweed raglan project on Ravelry. Pardon the goofy photo. I'm glad it's done. I've left the neckline unfinished. It's a little chunky for my busty frame, but I'm sure that if I used a smaller gauge yarn it would look much nicer. It's my lounge-around-the-house-sweater.

I also worked on the textured shawl, which lumbers along row by neverending row. It's going to be another year before that thing's finished if I'm lucky. I can't find the copy of Knit.Wear with the pattern in it and that's a problem. I might have to buy a digital copy for the next increase row.

I have another sock to knit, which I might take to the playground while the kids run around and play. I'm itching to knit a hat out of this beautiful merino/silk blend from that custom yarn place in SF that closed. All in all I'm happy to be stashbusting. If I stay on the stashbusting course until I'm back in the work force I just might be able to buy more yarn again. ;)

Year of Projects - Finished Object!

airmarlehat1

I think this is the fastest knitting project I've done in years. Years! The Yorkshire Tweed Beret from One Skein Wonders (albeit knit with Zealana Luxuria Air Marle) is finished. I could not wait to finish this thing. It's just been so long since I've had such a quick knitting project finished. Perhaps it's time to knit more hats? Part of it is that the Air Marle was so ridiculously soft that I could not put this knitting project down. The other reason why I couldn't stop knitting this hat was that the pattern was super simple and easy to remember. I might be on a path to do a series of hats of Yarn Harlot proportions (how many Tulip baby sweaters has she knit?). I might have a bit of a beret binge. I already have a yarn in my stash in mind to knit another beret.

Oh, so you see that provisional crochet cast-on up there? (it's in the purple). You might recall that I was a little iffy on the provisional cast on, but it turned out to be a lifesaver. I did not have enough yarn to do the garter stitch at the bottom of the hat and having the provisional cast on gave me the flexibility to do whatever bind off worked. In this case it was a jenny's surprisingly stretchy bind off, which may have turned out too stretchy, but I gave the hat a little seam in the back to shorten the circumference of the hat and make it fit better. Personally, I like knowing where the back of something is so now this hat has a "back side".

Here's another look at the Air Marle. The amount of fuzz I think is from the possum, which makes my knitting have that soft felted feel, but without the lack of stitch definition.

I am so happy with the finished product (especially since I have super short hair right now and hats are what make me look cute these days).
