It's Yarn Along again. Time to see what knitters are knitting and reading all around the interwebs. It's a great way to find new knitting blogs and get people to find yours too!! Click here to read all of our old yarn along posts. We've been doing this a while and you can see our progress on our knitting for almost the past year!
Today I'm going to do something unusual. I'm not going to share a book. I'm going to share an editorial posted by Stephen Fry, one of my favorite British actors and political activists. He wrote a letter to the British Prime Minister David Cameron to request that Great Britain boycott the upcoming Winter Olympics in Russia. I wholeheartedly agree and wish to see my leader, President Barack Obama also boycott the Winter Olympics due to the torturous treatment of Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender people.
Whether or not you support the gay community, you have to agree that no human deserves to be violently attacked. Unfortunately this is what is happening to people in Russia who are gay or even just suspected to be gay or queer. It is utterly frightening. Furthermore, laws are being put into place to enable the police to ignore such crimes.
Beatings, murders and humiliations are ignored by the police. Any defence or sane discussion of homosexuality is against the law. Any statement, for example, that Tchaikovsky was gay and that his art and life reflects this sexuality and are an inspiration to other gay artists would be punishable by imprisonment. It is simply not enough to say that gay Olympians may or may not be safe in their village. The IOC absolutely must take a firm stance on behalf of the shared humanity it is supposed to represent against the barbaric, fascist law that Putin has pushed through the Duma.
I am very glad to hear that Obama has recently spoken out against these atrocities.
In place of a picture of my knitting, I'm going to share a beautiful rainbow-colored yarn available from Jimmy Beans Wool: Cascade Souk.
